A Solstice Practice

KWMystic

Photo by Julie Murphy. For three days, the day before, the day of, and the day after the Solstices, twice a year (once in June, once in December), the Sun "stands still", rising and setting at the same place on the horizon, before it resumes its southerly or northerly progression that creates the seasons. The Solstices are amazing doorways through which the aware, conscious presence of the Sun is magnified and channeled with great intensity. Yet learning to speak "the language of the Sun" is like studying any language, it takes time, patience and persistence. Because we have not been taught how to communicate with the Sun, we need to practice. If you can, go somewhere you can see the sunrise or sunset. If you cannot, then sit facing east in the morning and west in the evening and connect with the sun through whatever obstruction is present.

Not sure where the four directions are? There are many free compass apps for your cell phone, and you can often find inexpensive compasses at toy stores and dollar stores. Imagine that you can soften your entire chest and heart so that your body is like a sponge. Become comfortably aware of your breath. Breathe fully but naturally. Your breath will connect you with your own aliveness. Keep returning to an awareness of your breath as you sit with the Sun. As the Sun approaches the horizon, imagine that you can feel the Sun's spirit and the Sun's love. Feel the power of the Sun's personality. Imagine the Sun's connection with you. Breathe and with each breath, express gratitude for the Sun. Invite yourself to get to know the Sun at a deeper level than you ever have before. What did our ancestors know that we have forgotten? If you do not feel anything significant be patient. It took me many years before I could say that I had any type of profound experience. Learning any new language takes time.
